Norway orders NASAMS air defence components from Kongsberg
The Norwegian government has signed a contract worth approximately Nkr1bn ($98m) with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace to procure additional National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) air defence components.
The new order is expected to enhance Norway’s defence capabilities in combating aerial threats.

Norway Defence Minister Tore O. Sandvik said: “The government is prioritising strengthening our air defence. This agreement is an important step in ensuring increased response capacity and protection of Norwegian forces and critical infrastructure.”
The latest procurement will see NASAMS batteries fitted with new command posts, wheeled communication nodes and upgraded radio equipment.
The MRR radios that are currently in service will be replaced with Kongsberg’s THOR Combat Net Radio, which is said to offer higher capacity and functionality.
In addition to the main order, the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA) has also ordered further long-lead components to facilitate swift delivery of extra NASAMS systems as per Norway’s Long-Term Plan for the Defence Sector.
NDMA director Gro Jære said: “With this acquisition, we ensure that the NASAMS departments receive flexible and modern command posts and communication systems that provide faster decision support, higher tempo and increased survivability.”
The NASAMS system, developed jointly by Raytheon and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, is designed to detect, track, and neutralise aerial targets such as aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and uncrewed aerial vehicles.
It also provides coverage for high-value sites and densely populated areas against air-to-surface threats.
The medium-range, network-centric air defence system, initially developed for the Norwegian armed forces, is now deployed by 13 nations.
In March 2024, Norway announced a strategy to expedite both production and procurement of NASAMS by allocating Nkr941m for Kongsberg.
Kongsberg was also tasked with supplying new multi-missile canister launchers and Fire Distribution Centres for Norway’s NASAMS in February 2024.
