Singapore Army probe into Leopard 2SG tank issue

Singapore’s Ministry of Defence (Mindef) has completed its probe into the malfunction that affected a Leopard 2SG main battle tank (L2SG) on 5 July 2025.
The issue surfaced while the tank was being readied for the upcoming National Day Parade 2025, specifically as the vehicle was manoeuvring towards North Bridge Road within a designated secure zone.
An investigative process revealed that the problem originated from an internal transmission component, which is responsible for channelling transmission fluid to the service brake.
This malfunction led to a drop in transmission oil pressure, resulting in diminished steering and braking capabilities in the L2SG’s service brake.
This incident marks the first occurrence of such a technical fault within the L2SG fleet of the Singapore Army.
Subsequent evaluations of the entire L2SG fleet have confirmed that this was an isolated incident.
RENK, the manufacturer of the tank’s transmission system, has acknowledged that this type of malfunction had not been encountered before.
The company is set to collaborate with the Singapore Army to develop a maintenance plan aimed at preventing future incidents involving this particular component.
As an extra safety measure, additional inspections have been carried out across all L2SGs, verifying that their transmissions are functioning correctly.
The tanks are cleared to participate in the National Day Parade 2025, Mindef said in a statement, as causes of the malfunction are now discovered and addressed.
Mindef said: “The safety and well-being of the public and our crews remain of paramount importance. Our crews are trained to respond to different situations with established standard operating procedures.”
Meanwhile, the ministry has advised public to heed instructions from road marshals and keep a safe distance from military vehicles.
The Leopard 2SG weighs 55.15 tonnes and can reach speeds up to 72km/h on roads and 60km/h off-road.
It is equipped with a Stabilised Control System operated 120mm L44 smoothbore gun, that features a fire control system designed to enhance firing accuracy.
