Canada seeks $160m Joint Light Tactical Vehicles sale from US
The US State Department has agreed a potential $160m foreign military sale (FMS) of Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTVs) and associated equipment to Canada.
Canada seeks to procure up to 60 JLTVs and up to nine JLTV cargo trailers.
The package also includes a suite of non-major defence equipment items such as communication and mobility equipment, enhancements for lethality and survivability, spare parts, special tools and test equipment, maintenance trainers, and comprehensive training and support services.
The US government will also offer its contractor technical, engineering, and logistics personnel services and other related logistics and programme support.
AM General is designated as the principal contractor for this transaction.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency has notified Congress of the potential sale.
This sale is anticipated to serve US foreign policy and national security interests by enhancing Canada’s military capabilities.
It aims to better equip Canada to address both current and emerging threats while fostering its ability to navigate complex and evolving operational landscapes.
Furthermore, the sale is expected to promote “increased burden-sharing with allies and partners in in support of peace operations and peacekeeping around the world”.
The Canadian forces will integrate these new assets seamlessly into their operational framework without disrupting the regional military equilibrium.
The execution of this sale will necessitate the involvement of US government and contractor representatives in Canada over a six-year period to oversee fielding, training, and logistical support.
This proposed FMS follows Canada Prime Minister Mark Carney’s announcement of a new defence spending plan in June 2025.
The country proposed to scale up its military-related investments to more than C$9bn ($6.5bn) in this fiscal year (2025-26).
According to GlobalData report, Canada’s defence budget is projected to level off at $41.6bn By 2030. Concurrently, funds allocated for procurement are forecasted to hit $17.7bn.
