Australia conducts first test of PrSM

The Australian Army has fired a Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) for the first time, boosting the defence force’s long-range strike capability.
The firing was conducted at the Mount Bundey Training Area located southeast of Darwin earlier in July 2025.
The PrSM successfully engaged and struck a target situated more than 300 kilometres (km) away within a span of four minutes and three seconds, reported Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
The missile, which reportedly travelled at speeds approximating 4,050km per hour, is designed to engage distant adversaries with limited forewarning and superior precision.
The PrSM was launched using a High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), representing the latest in long-range missile technology capable of exceeding distances of 500km.
The demonstration was witnessed by Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy and US Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll.
The procurement of the PrSM is in line with directives from the 2024 National Defence Strategy, which focus on enhancing littoral manoeuvring and increasing long-range land and maritime strike competencies.
This test was executed two years ahead of its planned schedule.
It follows both the early delivery of the first PrSM by one year and the initial HIMARS by two months.
Earlier in 2025, Australia and the US formalised their collaboration through a memorandum of understanding concerning the production, sustainment, and ongoing development of the PrSM.
Later in the year, discussions are slated to begin regarding potential avenues for domestic manufacturing and maintenance of the PrSM within Australia.
The partnership between Australia and the US will persist as both nations work as co-development allies to further refine the PrSM to sustain their leading position in military technology.
Anticipated enhancements to future missiles include an extended range capability exceeding 1000km, advanced sensor technology, and innovative warhead designs.
Pat Conroy said: “Today’s PrSM firing is another example of the Albanese government accelerating long-range strike capabilities for the ADF, alongside the firing of Standard Missile 6, the Tomahawk missile and the Naval Strike Missile last year.
“From delivering HIMARS ahead of schedule to delivering and testing PrSM ahead of schedule, the Albanese government is modernising the Australian Army at speed.
“This successful launch is a significant milestone in the government’s plan to deliver a twenty-five-fold increase to Army’s long-range strike capability.”
