Moog showcases larger gun variant of RIwP in UK
Precision motion control components and systems manufacturer Moog has showcased a new larger gun variant of its Reconfigurable Integrated-weapons Platform (RIwP) in the UK, designed for counter-drone operations.
The company displayed the RIwP with the 30x173mm Bushmaster Mk44 chain gun for the first time in the country, at the British Army Counter-UAS Expo held at Thorney Island in July 2025.
The RIwP system is known for its modular design, allowing users to customise their loadouts with various effectors and sensors to meet specific operational needs.
The latest configuration includes high-technology readiness level (TRL) components, and has undergone live fire exercises with the US Army, indicating a low-risk solution for potential adopters.
The 30x173mm chain gun represents a step up from the previously showcased 30x113mm cannon in the UK.
Both calibres are designed to fulfil counter uncrewed aerial systems (CUAS) roles, offering different capabilities based on mission requirements, said the company.
Moog EMEA capture lead Richard Allen-Miles said: “The blistering pace at which new threats are appearing and evolving on the modern battlefield demands a weapon system that can evolve at an equally rapid rate – this is ingrained in RIwP.
“We look forward to demonstrating the capabilities of RIwP further across a range of mission sets for the British Army. In addition, we are committed to ensuring that RIwP delivers not only for the British Army, but for UK jobs and economic prosperity as part of the government’s growth agenda.”
The shared base hub design of the RIwP enables operators of the 30x173mm variant to use common maintenance resources, logistics, and spare parts with other units equipped with RIwP systems.
This interoperability extends to various military roles, encompassing short-range air defence and mounted close combat overwatch, among others.
Moog is preparing a specialised facility in the UK for RIwP manufacturing and support, should it be selected for British Army service.
This initiative will draw on Moog’s existing expertise from the US and expand its UK supply chain, furthering economic development and national security interests.
Currently, RIwP serves as an operational counter-UAS system within two significant US Army programmes: SGT Stout and Mobile Low, slow, small, unmanned aircraft, Integrated Defeat System (M-LIDS).
