Raytheon LTAMDS radar completes another 360-degree flight test

RTX business unit Raytheon has successfully completed a flight test for its Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor (LTAMDS), showcasing its 360-degree full-sector sensing capabilities.

The test utilised one of the radar’s secondary arrays to track and intercept a target that simulated a realistic threat.

Lockheed Martin’s Patriot Advanced Capability – 3 Missile Segment Enhancement (PAC-3 MSE) was used in the test to successfully intercept a target, leveraging data from LTAMDS’s secondary sector.

A key goal of this test was to validate the integration of LTAMDS with the Large Tactical Power Source (LTPS), which was recently delivered.

LTAMDS, equipped with three radar arrays, offers coverage and robust capacity, allowing it to counter large-scale, “coordinated attacks” involving various threats like drones, advanced aeroplanes, and an array of missiles including ballistic, cruise, and hypersonic.

To date, the system has undergone nine successful flight tests that have progressively increased in complexity to demonstrate its effectiveness against actual threats.

In November 2024, Raytheon concluded a successful live-fire demonstration of the advanced, 360-degree LTAMDS.

Raytheon Land & Air Defense Systems president Tom Laliberty said: “LTAMDS’ 360-degree full-sector sensing capabilities specifically address massive, coordinated attacks from adversaries.

“As international demand grows, Raytheon continues to invest in our production capacity to quickly deliver this critical capability to customers.”

This achievement comes on the heels of the radar receiving a Milestone C designation, which marks the transition from prototype to production and deployment.

In April 2025, the US Army officially recognised LTAMDS as a programme of record.

Poland became its first international customer in 2024, incorporating it into their air and missile defence framework.

Several other nations are also considering acquiring LTAMDS for their defence systems, according to RTX.
