Rheinmetall, Lockheed Martin first live fire of GMARS launcher

Rheinmetall and Lockheed Martin have successfully conducted the first live fire demonstration of the Global Mobile Artillery Rocket System (GMARS) launcher at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, US.
The GMARS development programme focuses on delivering a European-manufactured mobile artillery system capable of long-range precision strikes, designed to enhance the survivability and adaptability of military forces.
In 2023, Rheinmetall and Lockheed Martin partnered to develop the GMARS, responding to the increased need for extended-range rocket artillery.
The GMARS launcher is based on Rheinmetall’s HX vehicle series and is designed to provide a “high degree of mobility, survivability and versatility”.
The test showcased its capacity to launch Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) rockets.
Rheinmetall Vehicle Systems Europe CEO Dr Björn Bernhard said: “We are thrilled to have achieved this major milestone in the GMARS programme. The successful live fire showcases the system’s precision and reliability, and we are confident that GMARS will meet the evolving needs of our customers.”
The launcher is capable of being outfitted with various munitions, such as two ATACMS, four PrSM, 12 GMLRS Standard Range, or 12 Extended Range GMLRS missiles.
These munitions are already in use by Germany and allied nations, ensuring compatibility and support for joint military operations, stated the companies.
The GMARS launcher aligns with existing M270A2 and HIMARS launchers used by military forces in Europe. This feature ensures seamless integration into current operational frameworks.
The GMARS offers comparable ammunition capacity and firepower as M270 systems while being mounted on a leading tactical truck platform.
Lockheed Martin Tactical Missiles vice president and general manager Paula Hartley said: “The GMARS programme is a prime example of this commitment, and we are pleased to have successfully demonstrated its capability in this live fire exercise. With this milestone accomplished, we are poised to rapidly qualify and bring this capability to market.”
