US Army’s PrSM Increment 1 moves into P&D with Milestone C

The US Army’s Precision Strike Missile Increment 1 (PrSM Increment 1) programme is progressing into the production and deployment (P&D) phase after securing Milestone C approval on 2 July 2025.
This programme aims to counteract enemy anti-access and area denial capabilities by engaging targets beyond 400km.
It marks a ‘significant enhancement’ in the Army’s capacity for long-range precision strikes.
The PrSM Increment 1 is set to supplant the existing Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS), a conventional surface-to-surface artillery weapon system.
It will provide the US Army field artillery units with extended range and increased destructive power, enabling them to carry out deep strikes against high-value targets and gain superior control on the battlefield.
Program Executive Officer Missiles and Space major general Frank Lozano said: “This Milestone C decision is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire PrSM team.
“PrSM will provide our soldiers with a critical capability to engage and defeat threats at extended ranges, enhancing our ability to deter aggression and protect our national security.”
In March 2025, defence contractor Lockheed Martin secured an indefinite delivery indefinite quantity contract from the US Army, with a potential value of $4.94bn, for the production of PrSMs.
The contract outlines a procurement timeline spanning from 2025 to 2029, during which the Army intends to acquire 1,296 PrSM missiles.
In April 2025, the US Army and Lockheed Martin successfully executed a short-range production qualification test launch of the PrSM from an M270A2 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) launcher at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.
The PrSM Increment 1 is designed for compatibility with both existing High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and MLRS platforms.
The HIMARS can carry various munitions configurations including a six-pack of GMLRS rockets, two PrSMs, or one ATACMS missile, allowing for flexible deployment options across the MLRS munitions family.
